"Monkey see, monkey kill! That's your inspiration for the next scenes! You're killing to entertain, so take your time and play to the camera!"
- The Director

Doing Time is the 12th scene in Manhunt and James Earl Cash's second encounter with the Smileys.

Cash has now made it to the deserted cell blocks of the Darkwoods Penitentiary and is instructed to stay there to kill more Smileys. Using a Hammer and a Metal Baseball Bat, he will give Starkweather enough gore until the doorway leading upstairs is opened.

Cash must first find a Hammer and perform a Violent and a Gruesome execution with it and then kill the certain Smiley carrying a Metal Bat. Upon obtaining it, he must repeat the same executions with the Red Class melee weapon.

Once upstairs, Cash gets involved in a serious gunfight with Revolvers and Shotguns against more Smileys before making his way to the shower block.

Trivia[]

  • This scene is the only appearance of the Hammer in Manhunt.
  • If a player brings the Severed Head of the Hunter patrolling the tower to the Guard Room in the previous level, Starkweather will leave Cash a Shotgun inside a room, up the stairs and to the left.
  • Dead bodies, likely orderlies or other inmates, can be seen hanging from the ceiling.
  • At the beginning of the level, Starkweather will say "monkey see, monkey kill". Achieving at least a 3 star rating on this scene, as well as in Mouth of Madness, Kill The Rabbit, Divided They Fall, and Press Coverage will unlock a bonus scene called Monkey See, Monkey Die, which features Monkey Hunters.
    • Cash was originally supposed to wear the Monkey suit during this level, as unused text in Mouth of Madness.gxt states that a Smiley guarding the watchtower was supposed to wear a Monkey suit and Starkweather told Cash to put it on at the beginning, but was ultimately cut from the game. Interestingly, Starkweather will sometimes say "Hunt the monkey, boys". when Cash is spotted - referencing the "Monkey see, monkey kill" line.
    • Ironically, the cheat called "Monkey Skin", when enabled, actually allows Cash to be in the Monkey suit, as it replaces Cash's sprite with that of a Monkey. This can allow the player to somewhat experience the scene's beta content.
  • There are no Green Class Weapons anywhere in this scene.
  • In beta screenshots, the Crowbar can be seen in this level. However, it is cut from the final game.
  • According to a beta screenshot, there was a a padlocked door before the room where the Shotgun reward is, but it was cut from this level.
  • This scene, unlike all other levels, does not have a fixed number of Hunters due to the Hammer and Metal Bat execution objectives. If the player completed the executions with the two weapons at the first attempt, the number of Smileys would be 19. Otherwise, the counter at the scene completed screen can become much higher.
