Not to be confused with the Circular Saw, a Blue Class weapon in Manhunt 2.

The Chainsaw is a rare Red Class weapon appearing in Manhunt. It is the signature weapon of Piggsy, and therefore exclusively found in Deliverance. Despite this, it is also available in the bonus scene Time 2 Die.

Use[]

Like the Baseball Bat, the Chainsaw is only effective at close range, and is almost completely useless against enemies with firearms. A notable feature about the Chainsaw is that it can be turned on and off. Keeping it turned on makes it quicker to attack Hunters, but due to the constant loud noise, enemies will easily be able to find James Earl Cash in the shadows, so it is recommended to turn it off when not in use.

It can also be used to cut through certain locked doors.

The Chainsaw is first seen used by Piggsy when he breaks free and starts killing the Cerberus and later attempts to cut through the elevator doors to get to Cash who is inside, but escapes, in Deliverance.

Cash then battles Piggsy who is armed with the Chainsaw until Cash eventually executes him with it, and uses the same weapon to kill the remaining Cerberus and cut through the door to Starkweather's office, where he hunts down Lional Starkweather himself and ultimately butchers him. Cash then leaves the Chainsaw lodged into Starkweather's back, where the game ends.

The Chainsaw can also be found during the bonus mission, Time 2 Die, inside the Maverley and Sons warehouse to significantly aid Cash in killing the Hoods, who are fleeing from him.

The chainsaw's brand name, "TENNANT" can be seen printed on the chainbar. Speculation is that it is named after Manhunt's Lead Animator developer, Mark Tennant.

Executions[]

Weapons red chainsaw
  • Hasty: The Hunter turns around and as he does Cash cuts his head off in one swift slice, similar to a sword.
  • Violent: Cash stabs the Chainsaw into the Hunter's back, he then revs it up before taking it back out.
  • Gruesome: Cash rams the Chainsaw down the Hunter's head, causing him to fall to his knees (even though he's already dead), turning his head into nothing but mush. Cash continues to keep the blade of the Chainsaw revved up in the Hunter's stomach, after a few seconds Cash takes it back out and lets the Hunter fall to the ground.
  • Special (When used on Piggsy): After Cash tricks Piggsy for the second time to walk on the platform, it collapses under Piggsy's weight and leaves him hanging from the edge, Cash uses the chainsaw to slice off Piggsy's arms and sends him falling to his death.
  • Special (When used on Starkweather): Cash slices Starkweather's stomach, causing guts to fall out and as Starkweather begs for mercy, saying "Cash, I made you!", Cash violently drives the Chainsaw directly into his face, exploding his head and killing him instantly. He then lodges it into the now-dead Starkweather's back like a sword and leaves it sticking out.

Trivia[]

  • In the real-world, chainsaws are a construction tool used to cut down trees, firewood, concrete, ice, etc. While not technically a weapon, due to their intimidating appearance and substantial ability to slice through objects, and some are even used in slaughterhouses to process meat, chainsaws became known in pop culture as such in many horror-themed films and video games since the 1970s including The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (which ironically inspired Piggsy and had its own video game adaptation on the Atari 2600). Alongside Manhunt, Rockstar Games used chainsaws for the Grand Theft Auto games as well, most prominently Vice City - itself inspired by the 1983 film Scarface, which contained an infamous scene of Tony Montona watching one of his partners dismembered by a Colombian gangster inside a bathroom. Despite their influence of violence in fiction, real-life cases of attacks or murders using chainsaws are surprisingly rare, due to their cumbersome weight, loud noise, and risk of injury to the user.
  • Strangely, Piggsy is seen with a yellow Chainsaw in Border Patrol opening cutscene instead of the standard red one found during gameplay and in artworks.
  • On the PlayStation 2 version, the sound effects of the Chainsaw exist in a removed scene called "COM_TOWE".
  • It is unknown where Piggsy obtains the Chainsaw when he broke free from the attic of Starkweather's Estate, but it is most likely his weapon of choice during the time he used to participate in Starkweather's snuff films prior to James Earl Cash, and knows where it was stashed.
    • The game's instruction manual also states that Piggsy purposely keeps his Chainsaw's blade dull and rusty to make his victims suffer as much pain as possible. But, given his poor mental faculties, this could also have been a decision made by Starkweather. It even says Piggsy has his signature signed on the blade, which is an "X."
  • If the player immediately acquires the Chainsaw via trainers and attempts to execute Piggsy with it, it will play the same animation used for executing Starkweather. His stomach won't be slashed apart but his head still explodes, the sound is buggy and Piggsy himself doesn't speak, and the game will end straight away once the execution is over. A likely reason why this happens is that the final mission is programmed to end when that specific animation plays. The reason it occurs on Piggsy is most likely because he shares the same special body type Starkweather does, as both are the final bosses of Manhunt.
  • If one listens closely, the revving sound of the Chainsaw is a continuous loop, even if not being actively used for attacking. This can be seen with Piggsy going on and off with the weapon when seeing Cash repeatedly or if the player does the same.
  • In the beta version of the game, the Chainsaw lacks its textures and strangely, can be used as a melee weapon (ironically like Piggsy does with it).
  • The effect of a Hunter being directly hit by the Chainsaw is similar to being shot by the Sub-Machine Gun.
  • Piggsy attacks with the Chainsaw in a different way Cash does. Unlike Cash, who drives it into his target, Piggsy swings it like a melee weapon, given his strength. It will take up to 3 hits for him to kill Cash, with the damage on-par with a direct hit from a Shotgun or Sniper Rifle.
    • However, most executions show Cash wielding the Chainsaw in the same manner as Piggsy.
  • This is the only weapon in Manhunt to have more than three executions.
  • When Piggsy fights Cash in Deliverance as a Hunter, the Chainsaw is off when he is idle. When he becomes suspicious, he turns on its motor, and anytime he spots Cash or is aware, he constantly revs it to attack.
